AFRICA OPPORTUNITY:
The Opportunities of Biofuels in Africa

Africa has less than 50 refineries, and the number is rapidly dwindling as the continent continues to lose most of its refinery capacity in response to growing operating costs to meet new regulations. However, the closures of these old and inefficient refineries has presented the region with some fuel alternatives that include diversifying the region's fuel sources, which could have economic and environmental benefits.
As sub-Saharan Africa is well endowed with natural resources and possesses considerable potential to produce sustainable liquid biofuels, the use of biofuels offers the region cost-effective and low–carbon emitting approaches that provide reliable fuel sources while boosting rural livelihoods and reducing fuel import costs.
