AFRICA TREND: Electric buses to join South African bus service fleets

“The City of Cape Town should have battery electric buses (e-buses) operational on its MyCiti bus service by mid-2027” says Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas.

Urban Mobility Directorate (UMD) has been mandated, in accordance with Cape Town’s Climate Change Action Plan (CTCCAP), to develop a procurement strategy for low-carbon emission vehicles and fuels, in pursuit of carbon neutrality. Both the CTCCAP and Green Transport Strategy (2018-2050) from the national Department of Transport, push for public transportation services to incorporate clean energies within the next few decades.

The MyCiti bus service’s movement to procure a combination of battery electric and Euro VI (cleaner internal combustion engine) diesel buses is a direct result of this mandate, and they are not the only company to do so. Another well-established bus service, Golden Arrow Buses, announced its intention to introduce 60 new EV buses to its fleet in 2024. This represents the trend towards the use of clean energy in the transportation sector, which holds positive connotations for the sustainable future of South Africa.

AFRICA OPPORTUNITY: Mining-Centric SEZs Driving Growth

Africa is witnessing a surge in Mining-centric Special Economic Zones (SEZs), transforming the landscape of the mining industry. South Africa’s Platinum Valley, backed by Anglo American, is set to lead the hydrogen fuel cell revolution. Similarly, Tanzania’s Kabanga Nickel Project, leveraging SEZ benefits, promises cost-effective production. These zones offer lucrative incentives like significant tax breaks, creating fertile ground for investment and innovation.
