AFRICA TREND: Critical Metal Investment Requirements

In 2023, Frost & Sullivan Africa consultants highlighted the steps necessary for Africa to keep pace with the global energy transition. In this post, we will evaluate the progress made on the continent in one year. The first step highlighted involves the development of quality mining projects in metal-rich countries to establish Africa as a supplier in relation to global demand. Next, Frost & Sullivan Africa proposes the improvement of local refining capabilities so that more of the value chain can be captured by local economies. This can vastly improve employment capacities and positively impact economic growth. Lastly, relevant countries need to do what they can to develop intra-continental end-to-end value chains to avoid the loss of potential wealth available within the energy transition.

One must be aware that the world's transition to new energy systems will continue to occur with or without Africa. Therefore, the time to invest is now.

AFRICA TREND: Industrial AI Revolutionising Manufacturing in Africa

Africa's industrial landscape is undergoing a profound transformation with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into manufacturing processes. According to a recent Frost & Sullivan report, Industrial AI ranks as the top growth opportunity in industrial automation, with a projected CAGR in Africa of 25.01% from 2024 to 2030. This surge in AI adoption presents immense potential for Africa, enabling enhanced productivity, competitiveness, and innovation within the manufacturing sector.

Strategic partnerships play a pivotal role in this evolution, facilitating the development of tailored solutions in predictive maintenance, AI-driven robotics, and supply chain management. Moreover, the democratisation of technology allows for broader access to advanced systems, empowering manufacturers of all sizes to innovate and compete globally.

AFRICA TREND: South African Voter Eligibility

Of the 60 million people who call South Africa home, less than 50% of the country is registered to vote in the upcoming elections on the 29th of May. Considering those exempt from voting, such as non-citizen residents and citizens under the age of 18, there is a remaining 42,2 million people on which the country’s fate is relying.

It is crucial that the resultant government of an election is representative of the demands, preferences, and ideals of the nation, which cannot happen if only 64% of those eligible are registered to take part in the election process. This impacts the economy, business environment, and associated legislation that guides business in South Africa. Therefore, ensuring an outcome that accurately represents the needs of all who call South Africa home is imperative for the next five years until the next national elections.
