AFRICA OPPORTUNITY: Unlocking Ethiopia's Trade

The Addis-Djibouti road upgrade, backed by a US$73 million World Bank loan, is a pivotal step towards bolstering Ethiopia's international trade. Over 95% of Ethiopia's trade goes through this corridor, a crucial access point to the Indian Ocean. The project involves constructing 60km of a 126 km expressway, designing a one-stop-border post, and implementing policy and sector reforms in Djibouti’s transport sector. The road works will take 4.5 years whilst the various Djibouti consultancy services will take up to 3 years to complete. The upgrade will eliminate a currently inadequate 150km detour, reducing fuel and labor costs, thereby driving efficiency and trade capacity. The World Bank has committed US$730 million to improve road conditions, reflecting the gravity of the project. Dr. Kaiser Naseem, a banker for international development, stresses the significance of proper infrastructure and the role of the World Bank Group in funding it. The numbers reflect more than monetary investment; they signify an ambitious stride in Ethiopia's plan to become globally competitive. By modernising its road infrastructure, Ethiopia is setting the stage for a more streamlined trade process, fostering economic growth, and attracting foreign investments. This infrastructure investment will probably bring economic growth to the region.
