AFRICA TREND: Technological Innovation in Logistics
Moving a 40-ft container across the 20 to 25-day trip from Shanghai to Lagos costs US$4,000. Unfortunately, it costs US$4,000 to haul that container from Apapa Port to Lagos Mainland - a 20-minute journey. A blend of transport and customs fees within the city causes these high costs. In Africa, 70% of product prices are logistics costs, whilst only accounting for 6% in the United States. Enter Africa's logistics puzzle - rife with poor infrastructure and disjointed supply chains across 54 countries. Startups have noted the opportunity in the market and are tackling Africa's logistics challenge head-on. Kobo360 is a Nigerian platform connecting truckers with cargo owners to streamline the supply chain process and reduce costs. Lori Systems is a Kenyan startup that provides technology-driven solutions to optimise trucking logistics and minimise transportation costs. These two are part of six companies, highlighted in this post, using technology to improve efficiency, streamline the supply chain process and reduce costs in African logistics.

AFRICA OPPORTUNITY: Public-Private Participation to address the Water Infrastructure Challenge in South Africa
In an attempt to enhance the nation's water infrastructure, the South African government, in collaboration with various private sector entities, is currently piloting an innovative project model. In this pioneering approach, the government assumes a regulatory role, while private enterprises, in partnership with governmental institutions, undertake on-ground implementation. This comes as some of the world’s biggest mining conglomerates embark on a groundbreaking venture with the South African government, dedicating ZAR 27 billion to a water project that aims to provide essential drinking water to not only major platinum and chrome operations but also to the individuals residing in the surrounding regions. Key contributors to this transformative effort include Glencore and Anglo American Platinum, integral components of the Lebalelo Water Users Association.
The primary objective for these private entities is to secure 50% of the project's financing by year-end, with the remaining funds expected to be raised through collaboration between municipalities and the government. Distinguished as an unprecedented venture in South Africa, this project stands out as one of the most substantial water infrastructure undertakings not directed by the state. The comprehensive scope encompasses establishing an extensive network of pipelines spanning 400 kilometres, facilitating the daily distribution of 250 million litres (66 million gallons) of water. This invaluable resource will reach communities such as Polokwane and Mookgophong, encompassing urban and semi-urban areas.
This collaborative endeavour exemplifies a remarkable fusion of public and private sector forces, signifying a pioneering step towards sustainable water resource management and inclusive development.

BUSINESS DAY TV INTERVIEW: Digital Banking in Africa
